Happy Memorial Day! A big thank you to all the men and women who serve in our country's armed services.
Here's a little recap of the weekend I shared with the BF, family and friends.
Of course there was lots of grilling.
Lots of drinks
Lots of patriotic activities
I hope you all enjoyed great food and cool drinks in the company of wonderful friends and family. It now officially feels like summer. The rising mercury might help that too ;)
Off to read some of the Hunger Games before bed. I'm hooked!
Its officially Memorial Day Weekend and the unofficial start to the summer!! Summertime always holds a special place in my heart. It's always a time of care-free, fun memories. Summer time also makes me crave certain things in my life.
Here is what summertime means to me....
1.) Trips to the Jersey Shore- I have grown up only 1-2 hours from the Jersey shore, so day trips and long weekends are a pretty common past time here.
2.) Country Music- I don't know what it is, but when the temperature rises, all I want to do is drive around, a little crispy, sundress on, and belt out my favorite Kenny Chestney, Tim McGraw or Sugarland tune.
3.) Phightin Phils Games- Now I will not pretend to be a die-hard Phillies fan, but I make a point to attend a game or two each season.
4.) Road Trips- I usually get an itch to vacation during the summer months. My favorite trips have been during the summer months :) I've got a few on tap that you'll get to see later this summer ;)
Montana 2009
5.) Summer Lovin' - Two summers ago I met the BF and between him and my girls trips to Montana, it was probably one of the best summers of my life. Drinking and Dining outside is still on of my favorite things to do with him when the weather is warm.
Question: What does summer time mean to you?
When I am sick, I am a terrible patient. The coughing, headache, sore throat and clogged ears make me a little more than unpleasant. I may even whine. Maybe.
But when I am feeling under the weather, there are certain go-to items that always make me feel better. This week a sinus infection and chest cold have rocked my immune system, so my “needs” are very specific to my sore throat, pounding headache and loss of taste and smell.
Loss of taste and Smell
After reading Eat,Live,Run yesterday, and her “When I’m Sick” post, it had me focused on only spicy food. What better way to clear out the sinus passages than with a little Frank’s Hot Sauce.
Its never too early for hot sauce! Mama Pea uses it in her tomato tea, and I used it on my eggs with a little salsa fresco. Granted, all I could taste was hot sauce, but its better than nothing my friends! Sore Throat
Having a sore throat probably makes me the most cranky. I hate the feeling of swallowing sandpaper every time a sip of water is drunk. My go to – self medicating-cure includes a few things:
1.)Smoothies . This is especially good if you don’t have the whole post-nasal-drip thing going. If that’s the case, dairy is probably the last thing you want. But it just feels good to get a little spinach in ma belly and soothe my throat at the same time.
2.) Hot tea and honey. OoOo baby. Between the warmth of the tea and the slick coating of honey, my throat goes from raw mess, to soothed in a matter of 1-2 mugs. Its definitely a temporary fix, but in this hot weather I’m opting for smoothie.
Pounding headache
I don’t have headaches all that often, so when I do, they are epic. Sinus headache usually can be soothed with a little R&R for me or with the help of this bad boy. Hello Z-pack! Oh how I love you!
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to start on the most important part of recovery….rest
(annnd a little housewives drama)
Question of the night: Is anyone else a terrible patient?
Dear Monday-
I'm over you. Why can't be more fun like Friday? I dont appreciate you being, rainy, dreary and making me sick
Until next week-
Shannon
Today has been one of those days. It's rainy, I'm getting sick and I just lost my blog post that was supposed to be riiiiiiiight here. Full weekend recap coming tomorrow.
1. This commercial will never get old. "You look like a BEACH angel!"
2. The New Season of Real Housewives of New Jersey. I can't help myself. For some people their guilty pleasure is chocolate. For me its trashy TV......and chocolate :)3. Spinach in my smoothies. Thanks to Julie, I'm no longer afraid of a little green monster hiding in my breakfast.4. Yoga. I'm pretty sure if I took classes more, I'd be slightly less crazy .... slightly. Plus I'm pretty sure its improving my runs and my IT band syndrome.
5. Cheese. This will always....and I do mean always, make my top 5 things I'm loving. I may love cheese enough that I used to melt it in a mug and dip bread into the cheese. But thats another story for another day.....
This weekend was wonderful. Full of quality relaxation time with two of my favorite people- my bf and bff Kait.
Saturday started with a little run to get my muscules moving again. Body Pump had seriously kicked my butt! After Kait and I went to Hickory Kitchen for lunch.
Pulled Chicken and coleslaw. MmMm.
Lunch was followed by a little stroll around town and a afternoon matinee showing of Bridesmaids.
Holy hysterical! This is a must see for all of the ladies who are getting married, in wedding parties or who have attended friends' weddings.
After saying goodbye to Kait, my Saturday night was followed by some much needed relaxation time with the BF. Grilling, dessert and hanging on the couch sounds like the perfect rainy night date. :)
Sunday started off with a little yoga to ease into the day.
I love relaxing weekends especially when I know a busy week is ahead.
I'm off to watch some Real Housewives of NJ. Ahhhh my guilty pleasure! Hope your start to the week was a good one!
It has taken me until 7:00 to realize it's Friday the 13th. Are you superstitious about Friday the 13th? I'm starting to think its lucky because my Friday was pretty great.
I am all about relaxation tonight and it was a pleasant surprise to find the BF in the kitchen prepping dinner when I got home.
With good weather and good wine, I'm not really sure how your Friday night could go wrong :)
We decided to try Promis-Q-ous white table wine. Wow is it strong! We picked it up strictly based on the label.
Solid decision.
Dinner was an arrangement of healthy items. Tilapia steamed with Mrs.Dash Caribbean Citrus seasoning, steamed shrimp, steamed mushroom caps with thyme and corn on the cob.
With all that healthy food we're bound to have a little sweet tooth ;) We're off to get a little fro-yo. Perfect Friday night. I have
a special visitor coming!!
Question of the night: How do you purchase your wine? Are you well versed? Or are you an amateur like us and buy based on label design?
TGIF! Happy Friday everyone! Are you as exicted as me about the approach of the weekend?
Things that I am loving today:- The Fray Pandora Station. Rocking.My.World.
- I have a special visitor this weekend (but its a surprise- more on that later)
I plan on having an evening with a little of this (PS best watermelon beer ....ever)
and this
But before any of that begins, there is work to be done! Until later, sing it Rebecca!
What happens when you mix 90 degree humid heat, 1.5 liters of Smartwater and a runner that doesn't make time to stretch?
A beat up and sore blogger thats what!
Last night my running, work and workout buddy Erin and I decided to incorporate a little yoga into our workouts after feeling very tight during the Broad Street run.
It certainly helps that Ruelala was offering a special purchase for 10 classes for $25 at Philly Power Yoga. It is important to note the last time I took a yoga class was with my sister Lauren who twisted and bent like Gumby. I had NO CLUE that power yoga was not like the Hatha I had practiced in the past. With the room cranked to 90 degrees, sweat dripping off the tip of my nose, and poses that made my arms shake like a leaf, power yoga was pretty difficult.
I'd say it was pretty successful, that is until I kicked someone accidentally in the face. Yoga fail.
Philly Power Yoga is a terrific studio for beginners and yogis' alike. The instructor Steve was soothing, encouraging and best of all, he did not single anyone out. I will be using the rest of my certificate with excitement!
Today we both are a little sore to say the least, but its the good sore that makes you sleep like a baby. Speaking of sleep, I'm ready for some.
Question of the night: Have you tried Power Yoga? What did you think?
Hope all the mama's out there had a wonderful Mother's Day! In honor of my mama, Suz, here is a list of (just a few) things she has taught me.
- Your family always comes first.
- Laying in the sun has to be something that is built upon over time. Timers are your friends when trying to tan. Especially with my ging skin.
- Never try a new recipe for guests.
4. Dress for your body type, not necessarily for the fashion trend.
5. Learning Healthy Habits early on will benefit you later in life.
6. Don't chew gum while wearing a dress- its unlady-like, buy mints instead.
7. Both our loves for tequila further solidifies that we are mother and daughter.
8. What you want to hear, and what she (mom) will tell you may be two different things. She's truthful.
9. Fight hard for what you want in life. God only gives us what we can handle.
10. Bring the fun. Don't rely on others to make a good time. Bring the good time to them.
Show some love to your mama :) We certainly did this mo
